#SippyTimeBeer Review – @Moerleinbeers, @4StringBrewing, @Seventh_Son_Brewing & @ThirstyDogBeer

Moerlein OTRChristian MoerleinOver The Rhine Ale – If you don’t recall my trip down to Bockfest in Cincinnati (For Pete’s sake, they must be the only two articles not transferred over), you may not remember that Germans populated a large portion of Cincinnati. The Rhine River is the longest in Germany and Rhine also happens to be a commonly used by Germans with the spelling Rhein. At the time of settling, there was a river in that part of Cincy which was given that name. It is now paved over. It is where Moerlein got the beer name. This beer has three malt components to it along with Cascade and Fuggle hops in it. The malt is definitely the main flavor but the hops give it a nice little twist at 40 IBU. This beer comes in at 6.0% so you won’t fall into the river too easily drinking this beer. They don’t have a link to their distribution area so if you can find this one in your area, give it a try.

Four String Brass Knuckle CaskFour String Brewing Co.Brass Knuckle Pale Ale Cask Conditioned with Hull Melon & Spanish Cedar – It has been quite popular in town to cask condition beers. I’m going to guess this style isn’t just limited Cbus. Four String is doing so and the base for it was their Brass Knuckle Pale Ale which I enjoy to start with. I have no idea what Hull melon is until I looked it up. It is a style of hops. It is related to Cascade hops and has characteristics of honey dew melon and strawberry. I knew the taste was different but didn’t realize it was from hops and not an actual melon. The coloring was certainly influenced by it. Normally it’s a dark golden color but this one you can’t even see through. As for Spanish cedar, it is normally used in expensive closets but was used on a not so expensive beer. I can’t say I really got the woody flavor or aroma from it. This beer was an interesting try but wasn’t my favorite. At least I got to eat some Ajumama Korean Street food which is always great while I had the beer.

Seventh Son Mercury's WageSeventh Son Brewing Co.Mercury’s Wage – I took this beer with me as a present for my older brother in Richmond who supplied me with more choices than just one to make up for it. On the lower right of the picture is Chin Music Amber Lager which will get it’s own review. I did try it to see if I’d want to have more of it when I got back to town. It is a Belgian style farmhouse style saison. It is a very light beer at 4.2% ABV. It’s even light in color department even if my picture doesn’t show that. They impart a good deal of aroma with a little bit of flavor by dry hopping it with Centennial, Palisade and Willamette hops. My brother isn’t much of a hop head and he approved of it. I did too which is why I bought more after I came back from Richmond. A fantastic light beer to enjoy for extended periods. It’s a perfect session beer.

Thirsty Dog Smoke DogThirsty Dog Brewing Co.Rail Dog Smoked Black Lager – I feel like most of the beers that are smoked are porters or stouts. Their idea then was to use roasted barley in a lager which is the base for both of those beers. They also use proprietary apple smoked barley in addition to the roasted variety. That is all of the smoke they put into this beer so it isn’t a heavy dose which is good because even with roasted barley, this beer is fairly light. They do incorporate hops in this beer but not much at 24 IBUs. I can’t say I really tasted them. At 6.7% ABV, this beer won’t get you tanked too easily. Thirsty Dog is out of Akron OH near my old stomping grounds at Kent. They make some pretty good beer and this one might be my favorite. They distribute in much of the north east part of the country so if you get a chance, give this one a  try.

On the Untappd app, Thursday is New Beer Thursday so go out and give a new #SippyTimeBeer a try. – Kevin
