Too funny: Comparing Nailz to Kevin Kelly

As long-time listeners of our various aural incarnations know, we loooove to make fun of Nailz, the WWF’s resident ex-convict (oh, wait, they’ve had a bunch of those; I mean gimmick-wise), for his silly voice and promo style. I realize I grew up in Iowa and thus should have had more access to the AWA (my grandma was the only family member who had cable during the AWA on ESPN days, so I missed all of it until about 1989), and this isn’t any sort of groundbreaking discovery or anything… but it’s funny as fuck. Kevin Wacholz, who played “Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly in the AWA and Nailz in the WWF, had a unique voice for a professional wrestler, to say the least. Compare our homeboy Nailz:

to Squeaky McMousequeef here:

Again, this is hardly an Indiana Jones-level unearthing, as anyone who’s followed the old AWA shows on ESPN Classic has probably seen a dozen Kevin Kelly promos. But sweet jesus, it brought me to tears, and I hope it does the same for you. -Eric (P.S. Don’t choke me out, Nailz!)

He sounds like Linus in the latter clip. When he says “nowhere to be found” and his voice breaks, imagine Linus saying “sure, I can tell you, Charlie Brown.”
