Four safe bets for @WWE Summerslam – and one reason to hang onto your money

Gamblers have been betting on the predetermined outcomes of WWE events for some time now, even in light of the Reddit Spoiler, Dolphins1925, giving away winners and losers with (early) scary accuracy. (Dolphins, eh? Why is it that Miami-related stuff ruins everything?)

WrestleMania 30 cost bookies a lot of money when Brock Lesnar beat the formerly undefeated-at-WrestleMania Undertaker. With Lesnar putting the lone blemish on ‘Taker’s once-sure thing, is anything sacred? Is there a safe bet left in WWE?

Of course there is. And the second-biggest event of the summer is usually full of them. I mean, it’s summer! How can you send the crowd home confused? It’s happy time!

So let’s take a look at the four safest bets for WWE Summerslam – and the one thing that might curve the ball right across the corner of the plate.

1. Bray Wyatt will get his win back against Chris Jericho. Jericho is a part-timer who’s going back on tour with Fozzy in September. Everyone’s super high on Wyatt, and WWE needs heels. Jericho got a win at Battleground to stay relevant, but Wyatt needs this win to stay near the top.

2. Roman Reigns will beat Randy Orton, but it will be a 17-minute match. WWE loves to protect Randy Orton – maybe rightfully so, since every wrestler with a podcast calls Orton the second-best raw talent in the company. Reigns is the babyface with a rocket strapped to his back, but it’ll take him a while to beat the perennial golden-ish child.

3. Dolph Ziggler vs. Miz will not steal the show. Here’s your unsafe bet. Sorry, but these guys are going to get 10 minutes tops, and one of these guys is The Miz, who hasn’t shown a spark in almost four years. The stalled-out Ziggler isn’t enough to carry this match to “classic” level nor to generate an L.A. reaction for two stale wrestlers. I remember once upon a time when I liked both of these guys. Maybe again someday. Don’t get me wrong: It won’t be bad, but it won’t be Stephanie vs. Brie.

4. Stephanie McMahon vs. Brie Bella will steal the show. The Bellas came a long way over five years to their point where they’re more-than-passable wrestlers. Stephanie is the flag-bearer for the McMahon family company and takes this stuff seriously. They’re both ready to back up the fantastic drama that’s been built up to support this match. I predict a gigantic dog-and-pony show as well – get ready to pop when you hear Daniel Bryan’s music. I attended Summerslam 1999, and Shane McMahon vs. Test, with all of its shenanigans, interference and hilarity, is still one of the best matches I’ve ever seen live, and it featured a non-wrestling McMahon. Fifteen years later, I bet it happens again.

5. Brock Lesnar will beat John Cena. Brock is the ender of dreams this year, and he’s going to make – and, WWE hopes, draw – a lot of money being it. The outcome of this match will crush the children, wishers and hopers in the audience. But I actually believe that people are going to spend money not to watch Brock Lesnar versus John Cena, but to watch Brock Lesnar beat John Cena. They’ll get what they want, and it may even be in a fashion that causes ringsiders’ jaws to hit the floor again.

And just a few other “predictions”: We’ll see the U.S. Champion Sheamus, and no one will care…Hulk Hogan will appear once in front of the crowd and at least once backstage in another confrontation with Lesnar and Paul HeymanCesaro’s eye patch will cause him to bump into a wall, which will turn the “yodel” function back on in his brain…JBL will make reference to the 20th anniversary of his friend Eddie Guerrero’s tag match with Art Barr vs. El Hijo del Santo & Octagon right there in L.A., and that buffoon Michael Cole will no-sell it…At least one black dude will come to the stage with a microphone and ask where their representation is on the card (this is a white-ass show)…
